Getting Academic This Fall
You didn’t need to go to Bennington to dress like you did!
A couple of weeks back, I read Katabasis, the new novel by wunderkind RF Kuang. It’s a dark academic novel that combines the best parts of Dante’s Inferno and The Secret History with a hint of science fiction and fantasy. The book took me back to the dark, academic feeling I had when I first read Donna Tartt’s masterpiece many years ago.
Couple that with the fact that I had the Vid two weeks ago and started playing Hogwarts Legacy on my Switch 2, and I’m fully brought back into the academic school of style. My player in Hogwarts Legacy wears a tweed suit and a navy Oxford shirt with a tie and has on a charming set of glasses, and you know what, he looks pretty damn good.
This fall, I’ve been getting a little academic with it. Browns, and, navy blues and creams, and a little black. Corduroy, cashmere, the works!
I want to dress like a student who’s attending a small liberal arts school in the 60s, back when everyone was still getting dressed up to attend a lecture.
I compiled a list of some of my favorite pieces that have that academia vibe this season. As a side note, I feel like clothing prices, like everything else, are too damn high, taking the fun out of everything, so I tried to find relatively affordable pieces.
Loose Corduroy Pants in Brown - Banana Republic
The pants are at the top of my wishlist. Roomy, comfortable, chocolaty, stylish.
Relaxed Fit Rugy Shirt - Lacoste
You cannot beat the ease of a laidback, loose-fitting rugby shirt.
Puff Knit Half Zip Pullover - GU
Great color. It’s so good, I’d pay three times as much as it costs to get it.
Layton Kiltie Lug Weejun in Wine - GH Bass
Black and Brown are great, but you know what will go well with anything? Wine.
Rivington Relaxed Jean - Ralph Lauren
Great jeans for studying in the library and making a late-night food run.
OCBD, Evergreen Stripe - Wythe
Wythe has some of the best modern Americana garments. Treat yourself to an OCBD.
Sportcoat in Irish Donegal Wool - J.Crew
Wear it exactly how the model styled it.
A Vintage Letterman Jacket
They can be pricey on eBay because sellers know they're hot, but if you can find a good deal, you should probably bite.
Seiko Presage Negroni - Teddy Baldassare
College kids shouldn’t have any money, so they shouldn’t be wearing expensive timepieces. A Seiko Negroni is as elegant as you can get for under $500.
New York Mets ‘47 Royal Gold Age Wool Hat - MLB Shop
A cool cap for a historic team to wear in the cold months.
Peace and Love

Nice post! Do you think it’s possible to wear the first style with similar pants without the belt? I have a similar pair, high waisted, with a drawstring waistband. I am not sure how to properly style it. Any tips?
