The Outside Lands 2024 Lineup Just Dropped
Let’s get right to the good stuff. Our friends from Another Planet dropped the OSL ‘24 lineup yesterday, and by reactions on Instagram, it is quite the divisive lineup. People were going to complain regardless. It’s a foregone conclusion. They could have Michael Jackson and 2Pac on the lineup and people would complain. I think the lineup is pretty good though. Here are some initial reactions:
Tyler is a superstar. He has officially arrived. I can’t wait to see which Cartier watch he wears at his headlining set.
The Killers suck. I’m sorry. They have one good song in 20 years. Having them headline is insane to me.
Kaytranada, Jungle, Snoh Aalegra, and Channel Tres move the needle for me. I’ve been begging OSL to book Tres for years now.
Schoolboy Q might be under rated? Blue Lips is in the running for my favorite album of the year so far.
I can’t wait to see BADBAENOTGOOD because they have that one song that went triple platinum on TikTok.
Idris Elba on the turn tables? There’s no way I’ll skip the opportunity to see DJ Stringer Bell.
Little Vintage Gold Watches
I love a cheeky gold timepiece. I have a little gold Omega Constellation from the 1960s that was handed down from my grandfather. It’s beautiful, but I’m afraid of wearing it in public out of fear that I will somehow destroy this family heirloom. I have a tiny gold retro-inspired Casio watch that I love wearing, but I wanted something that felt similar to the Omega, so I hit the streets of eBay and went on a quest. That quest didn’t last long as I found a tiny, 34mm Caravelle piece from the mid-1960s. Caravelle is the more affordable line from Bulova, which is hard to believe because Bulova is pretty affordable as far as watches go. It’s a manual wind piece with Arabic numerals that still keeps pretty good time. I only paid $70 for it on eBay and it has the same look and feel as my vintage Omega, making it great for everyday wear.
Watching Watch What Happens Live in Bed
My partner and I were talking about how comforting a live talk show can be while lying in bed in the quiet moments before drifting off into a peaceful slumber. Live television feels communal. There is an invisible string connecting all of the viewers of any given live program, something that we’re losing at an increasing rate as we dive deeper head first into the age of streaming. Nothing puts me at ease before bed like The Bravo Godfather Andy Cohen interviewing any two Bravo-lebrities, especially if they come from Vanderpump Rules.
PGA Tour: Road To The Masters on PS5
I fucking suck at video games…this one included. Then again, when pushing 30, it doesn’t matter anymore whether or not you’re good at the game. All that matters is that you’re having fun. Video games are escapist for me and the latest PGA game channels the calmness of the physical calmness into the video game. We all know watching The Masters is like listening to a nursery rhyme. The video game is no different. I purchased from Gamestopoat the mall on impulse last weekend and played it from Friday night to Sunday morning.
Drawstring Pants
If you ask fashion-obsessed humans, they’ll tell you that elastic waists are sent from hell. The material cannot be recycled, they don’t hold up over time and many think that they are not flattering on anyone. I agree with the first two points, but I’m starting to come around the drawstring pants. I recently had a little health issue - nothing too serious - but I did have a tough bout with acid reflux - which resulted in a doctor telling me to wear drawstring and loose clothing for a while. The loose clothing hasn’t been a problem, but I love a 100% cotton jean, especially a vintage Levi’s pair. I’m a thick-thigh boy, so they tend to be a little snug on the waist, which was exasperating my issues. I’ve been enjoying some drawstring pants from brands like Gap and Uniqlo. They’re solid quality and look fairly structured everywhere but the waist, which no one will see because I’ve been wearing a lot of oversized t-shirts. I look relaxed and at ease in them, something that I don’t always feel in my 100% cotton Levi’s that have no stretch.
Anything Eve Babitz has Written
I’m currently reading LA Woman, a novel told in short vignettes about women living in Los Angeles. The novel has Eve Babitz trademark “coolness” factor to it. I had previously read Slow Days, Fast Company, and Sex & Rage, both of which I LOVED. Eve has a nonchalance and effortlessness in her writing while possessing a gift for sharp societal commentary. If I ever publish a novel about San Francisco (one day, wink wink), I’d take inspiration from the way that Eve Babitz immortalizes Los Angeles, painting it as this cold and distant, yet fast and elegant diamond in the rough.
Taking a Mental Health Day Every Once in a While
A couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t feeling like my best self. I was tired and overworked - a feeling that a lot of y’all know too well. I come from a workhorse of a family. My grandparents worked manual labor for their whole lives and my dad cashes out his PTO at the end of every year because he never takes a day off. It’s hard to step away when those are the standards your elders set for you, but I decided to take a mental health day, and I felt terrific because of it. I slept in and got a workout in. My brother and I went out and ate lunch at a sit-down restaurant. We had a beer and relaxed before going to a bookstore. Then one of my unemployed homies came over and we caught up over some wine while watching baseball on TV. It was exactly the kind of reset I needed. Every once in a while we need days like that because it can be easy to get lost in the hustle, but there’s much more to life.
