The Things that Make a Person Chic
Chic is a state of being. It can be learned and cultivated. Let's see how to get there.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines chic as ‘elegantly and stylishly fashionable.” When many people truly to picture “chic” personified, they see an effortlessly stylish French woman strolling along the left bank with a baguette under her arm in a baret, a briton top under a chore coat and black pants draping her body perfectly. You may think of celebrities of old like Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, perhaps the best classic examples of chic individuals.
Now that I’m in the 30-club, the allure of streetwear, dressing like a punk, etc.. has begun to fade. With every round of golf I play and the deeper I get into my career as I move up the ladder, the idea of being “chic” is moreso the goal now than ever. I’ve been into fashion for the longest time and I’ve lived many lives, seen many trends, and while I cannot predict where I will be from a style perspective in the future, I know where I am right now. I’m being much more thoughtful about the stuff I’m buying and I’ve grown pickier than ever.
Being chic includes giving off an aura of nonchalance and effortless, while still managing to appear put together. Thats why places like New York, Tokyo and Paris are so stylish, because fashion is part of the local DNA. Being well dressed isn’t an elective, it’s a requirement. Being around stylish people all day will eventually rub off on ther periphal and the tides rise.
The following list is items, habits and other aspects of life I consider chic. I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of stuff, so I’ll probably do a part 2 soon. With that, I present to you, without explanation, my chic list:
